A live act usually refers to the fact they use instruments IE: synths to play out the music manually (usually using DAT tapes and samples etc to make the set) as opposed to playing a DJ set (turntables, cdj's mixer etc).

Lab 4 always do their music live, so it usually looks a little something like this..




Many DJ's/Producers usually go under different aliases for different styles of music they play or produce OR because they are a duo under the name but only one of the duo are performing. I don't know what the circumstance is with Dark By Design (if they are a duo or not) but I'm guessing they are.

Their act is one of the most talented onstage I've ever seen, which is why I admire them so much. It takes alot of practise and sessions to get a set fully 100% right if your playing it live.
